In class, we read a sermon by Jonathan Edwards called, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God". The sermon was about how God controls who goes to heaven after death, and who goes to hell. In the sermon, Jonathan Edwards talks about how God can release the flood gates and almost drown you to death or aim at your heart with a bow and arrow if you have committed any sins.I believed that this sermon was to scare people because it basically says that when you commit sins, God is in control of what happens to you. Even I was kind of scared while ready this. The God I know and love would never do this; the God I know and love isn't this violent I thought.
I really dont agree with this sermon. I really don't believe that God is as angry or as viloent as Edwards describes in his sermon. I grew up believing that God created everything and not to diobey him or you will not go to heaven. I was never taught about God releasing the floodgates or shooting people with bows and arrows just because someone committed sins. Now don't get me wrong, committing sins is wrong and it is against what God wants you to do, and may send you to Hell, but I don't think that God will be so angry as to almost kill you to prove his point.

ReplyDeleteI think you have a point when you said that the sermon was created to scare people. Thats is the onlu logical explanation i can think of that would force a person to do this type of thing.
